Lisbon-based artist André Trindade and Urubu Tapes are back with another sound/visual object. The label’s 24th carefully crafted limited edition cassette comes with the sounds of Finnish artist Juha Puuperä’s Gruth project's latest offering. A continuation and progression of the ideas explored in 2018’s Laments for Tormenta Electrica, Somnum Exterreri consists of two long pieces composed as “tools for sleep concert DJ’s”. The album further investigates the fusion of neo-classical with elements of industrial, ritual ambient and noise music.
On side A, Puuperä creates a gradually intensifying, anxious soundscape through a combination of field recordings with time-stretched and heavily processed violin samples from his long-time collaborator KuJo. Various layers of sound gently evolve across time as an electronic witch drum in the tempo of a sleeping heartbeat gently pushes the piece forward. The first nightmare, Somnum Exterreri I, features the work of American artist Jeff Blanding’s db55 alias, as haunting reshaped Gregorian chants enter the field of sound halfway through the composition.
Somnum Exterreri II, on side B, dispenses another kind of bad dream. Here, unsettling dissonant violin alterations and field recordings from the coast of Bahia, Brazil, where Puuperä is based, are countered with reverberated electric guitars and the vaulted echoes of church bells.
