Rudi Brito eliminates Luar, focusing, on this release, on the second half of the alias he has been using since the beginning of the hiatus in which his partnership with Francisco Silva, as Yong Yong, has been immersed in.
'Dommage' is an exercise on listening that is divided in two parts, one for each side of the tape. Throughout this work, we find elements from the field recordings Rudi did in Porto Rico, where he lived for six months, and, as part of that archive, we can listen to traditional percussion instruments, excerpts from conversations, church bells, as well as more ambiguous sounds.
Side A, entitled 'Dog Suspiro', is a 20 minute musical sentence, a continuous piece that, like the title, contains elements of stillness and retreat. Sigh, as a gesture within the animal kingdom, is a fixation the artist has kept for quite a while, and, in this particular example, it shapes itself as a continuous narrative impregnated by the aforementioned recordings – the sound of steps we hear in the beginning ensure we are entering new lands, the fugacity of the landscape produces a dissociative effect on us, the compass enters in a spiral movement and our feet levitate, we fearlessly succumb to this new reality and sigh like a dog that can´t do much in order to change it.
'Falas Bué', on Side B, starts in a candid way, with a track where two synths in dialogue produce a complex musical arrangement, a solar tapestry that eludes more orthodox metrics to finally deliver tension on this side, culminating on a percussive sequence – the pronounced polyrhythms on this central theme are characterized by sinister chords and an arpeggio that seems to dance over its pace without ever confronting it.
'Dommage' is an essay on dissociation. On the image the artist produced for the cover, we see two characters that, with an uneasy expression, turn their eyes to an area of the table where there are no objects: is absence the source of their unrest, or are they seeing something that hides from us, to which we have no access?
